Mark Pickett's Biography

Born in the biggest town in the biggest county in the biggest state east of the Mississippi River, Pickett graduated from high school in the mid 1970’s as a top-two scholar and is listed in “Who’s Who In American High Schools”. He was a member of the WCHS Math Competition Team as well as the “Gator Band”, playing trumpet and drums in both marching and concert venues. On staff at Camp Tolochee near Brunswick, Pickett attained the rank of Star Scout and was a member of the elite Order of the Arrow. He worked as an electrician in his dad’s contracting business for many years, mostly part-time. Tasks included motor rewiring, power line construction, industrial and commercial structure wiring, job estimation and customer service. After high school, two years at North Georgia College as an ROTC Cadet, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, were followed by study at the Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (BEE). He began his engineering career at Honeywell Space and Strategic Systems Operations in Florida as a valued member of the Atlas/Centaur Design and Test Team, responsible for, among other things, launch support at the Cape. A witness to the Challenger Disaster, his next assignment was as module designer on a classified Star Wars surveillance program. Responsibilities included radiation-hardened memory and storage devices.

Pickett later joined Honeywell’s Military Avionics Division in St. Petersburg. His first project was a classified Navy aircraft program using Honeywell’s expertise in ring-laser gyro technology. Part of this job required design of a custom, radiation-hardened integrated circuit at the manufacturer’s (UTMC) facility in Colorado Springs. Rising from the rad-hard circuit requirement was the need for advanced computer-aided design and analysis capability infrastructure. Pickett championed this need and was instrumental in securing resources, including high-end computer workstations, to accomplish the goal. He was the MAvD Design Center’s first manager and network administrator. When Honeywell’s Central Technical Operations was unsuccessful in acquiring a design database and process engineer, Pickett was asked to join CTO in Phoenix. His understanding of the design process and data requirements resulted in the streamlining of CTO’s methods and automating tasks such as IEEE Standard schematic symbol generation. Honeywell Air Transport Systems Division was Pickett’s next stop in the Displays Group, which essentially control and show aircraft data as the heart of the system. Boeing 777, 737, 717, McDonnell-Douglas MD95, MD10, MD11 were systems Pickett contributed to over his tenure. After a stay in Displays, Pickett was transferred to Systems Integration whose task it is to configure, test, install, software-load and support all manner of flight control units as well as fly on flight test missions around the country. Pickett also supported NTSB investigations (SwissAir 111 MD-11). Albuquerque was next on the agenda at Honeywell Defense Avionics Systems Division where Pickett designed test software suites to evaluate systems on board KC10 & KC135 military aerial refueling aircraft. This was Pickett’s last assignment at Honeywell before shifting to an investment business as an entrepreneur for the past couple of decades. And that’s not all. Pickett is an internationally-certified SCUBA instructor as well as a licensed pilot who once landed on a golf course – on purpose. He has a drone operator FAA certificate. An accomplished catamaran sailor, Pickett plays guitar and likes to watch documentary programming on space and nature. Just a sample of Mark R. Pickett.
